Expanding International Learning Opportunities: Cooperation between VAMK and Kauno Kolegija

When we think about international collaboration in higher education, we often picture students traveling abroad for exchange programs for a longer or a shorter period like what is done in the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programs (BIPs). While these experiences are incredibly valuable, international cooperation doesn’t always require packing a suitcase. Thanks to the network of partners and modern technology we can provide more learning experiences to our students online .

One great example of internationalizing at home is the recent Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) lecture organized between VAMK and Kauno Kolegija. This session provided students with an opportunity to gain international exposure, collaborate with peers from another country, and strengthen their global business skills—all without leaving their laptop.

A unique learning experience for students

This COIL lecture brought together business students from two institutions but more so from over ten different countries, engaging them in a discussion on sustainability in the wide field of logistics. The aim was more than just a lecture on theories; his was a hands-on experience in working across borders, learning how different cultures approach sustainability, and stepping out of one’s comfort zone. The students enhanced their communication, and digital collaboration skills—essential abilities in today’s globalized job market.

The best part? Unlike traditional mobility programs, which require extensive planning, travel arrangements, and funding, this COIL session was accessible to all students, proving that internationalization at home is not just possible but also highly effective.

The excellence of Kauno Kolegija in planning and execution

A major reason for the success of this COIL lecture was the planning and execution by our Lithuanian colleagues Ms Simona Jankauskaitè & Mr Juras Tamelis from Kauno Kolegija. Their approach ensured that the session was informative, interactive and engaging. The topics were well presented and timely leaving enough room for the students to ideate from their own positions.

Strengthening future collaborations

This COIL initiative is just the beginning. Further online collaborations can complement traditional teaching on campus as well as the longer and shorter mobility programs like BIPs that have been brought into VAMK’s business program in an increasing manner over the past year. These experiences offer more students the opportunity to engage in international learning that can be applied in their future.

Moving forward, VAMK and Kauno Kolegija can expand on this success by developing additional COIL projects, joint courses, and other initiatives. With the right tools and commitment, we can continue to break down barriers to international education, making global learning accessible to even more students. Digital platforms can bring international collaboration to life, providing students with practical, cross-border experiences. With a strong foundation now in place, the partnership between VAMK and Kauno Kolegija is set to grow even further, benefiting students, faculty, and in the future also the broader academic community.
